The Hills Have Eyes!
The 2006 remake by Alexandre Aja, much more so than the original. The remake was way more graphic, whereas the original merely implied a lot of the violence and mutant rape.
Mutant rape? Yes, mutant rape! That is to say, rape by mutants, not rape of mutants.
I see a lot of horror movies and I’m not usually disturbed by any of them. Torture porn is off-putting, but it doesn’t get under my skin. I think some of the Wrong Turn series goes too far in how much delight they take in seeing people tortured, but they’re pretty cartoonish.
I was going through a period where I was watching all the most violent scenes from all the most violent movies on YouTube. That’s a lot of gory, violent stuff - and it included all the perverse junk in A Serbian Film that so many other commenters have rightly posited as one of the most disgusting movies ever made.
Nothing made me feel like The Hills Have Eyes, though. It just got to me.
It’s not like I hadn’t seen a million other disturbing horror movies before seeing this one, but something about the rape scene in the RV literally made me wish I could unsee it, for the first time in my movie-going life, and in all seriousness.
Any time children are depicted as victims of brutal violence is of course tasteless. For that reason I’m still a little disgusted with Feast 2, a series I actually really enjoy for some reason, and of course A Serbian Movie, and Clown. And let’s not forget the scene where Georgie is killed in It, although that scene has never felt gratuitous. It’s shocking, but not done for shock value. I just don’t like when filmmakers make children victims of violence in their movies just to get a rise out of the audience, or film it in a fetishistic way.
So! The Hills Have Eyes - if you haven’t seen it…
A nice, normal family has to watch their father being burned alive on some kind of mount. Pretty bad!
Then a new mother has to let a friggin’ mutant drink from her breasts while he’s holding a massive 357 Magnum to her baby’s head! All while her sister is being raped by a second mutant right behind her!
I’m sorry, man, it was just way too much! But it did make you root for Doug, the computer programmer, to become a badass and save his baby and remaining family members from the wicked mutants!
Go Doug! Kill those doggone mutants!
